Kahnawake Gaming Commission Chairman Dean Montour stated in a recent press release that preliminary results of its investigation into the cheating scandal that shook Ultimate
Bet showed that 1994 WSOP World Champion Russ Hamilton was the primary person behind the insider-betting ring.
Montour also stated that UltimateBet must pay a fine of $1.5 million and that six sanctions against the online site will be imposed. The KGC also vowed to help in the prosecution of Hamilton.
The investigation is being conducted by Catania Gaming Consultants, owned by former New Jersey assistant attorney general Frank Catania Sr., and the Australian game-testing firm Gaming Associates.
“The Commissioners have made several findings of fact with regard to the cheating that occurred on the UltimateBet website that included the identification of some of the individuals responsible for these incidents as
well as other significant violations of the Kahnawake Interactive Gaming Regulations,” Montour said.
The cheating went on for more than three years and involved the use of “superuser” accounts to view the hole cards of opposing players. The scheme was discovered when certain players took note of questionable tactics and began monitoring the relevant individuals. Due to the concerns of the players, the KGC began an investigation, which implicated dozens of screen names.
“My intention is to provide further information as it is uncovered, although the information already submitted to the KGC relating to UltimateBet warrants the KGC taking the actions it has,” Catania said. “Any further evidence uncovered with regard to cheating, withholding or destroying records, in our continuing investigation, will be reported to the KGC and the proper agency for appropriate action.”
