Benjamin LaBlond wasn’t awed by anyone.

An amateur player from Hull, Quebec, LaBlond beat Jeff Madsen heads-up to win the 2009 Canadian Open Poker Championship in Calgary on May 17th. For the victory, he received $100,000.

Madsen, the owner of two WSOP bracelets, earned $50,000 for finishing second.

In addition to Madsen, who has totaled $1,761,015 in winnings in his career, LaBlond also eliminated Phil Hellmuth and Brad Booth.

Overall, 93 players, including Gavin Smith, Antonio Esfandiari and last year’s champ, Huck Seed, participated in the event.

The buy-in was $5,000.
