Though Annie Duke played the game to perfection and was an easy favorite to win, NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice season finale was quite a suckout. Every poker player knows that Rivers can change everything and it’s too bad for Duke and her charity there was no bad beat jackpot. All season long comedienne and eventual winner Rivers leveled Annie with criticisms, insults and other personal attacks on both her character and profession. With all the primetime coverage and mainstream attention surrounding the show, poker now needs more of a facelift than Joan’s ever had. On the celebrity version of Donald Trump’s popular reality competition, Joan won the grand prize of $250k for her charity, God’s Love We Deliver. In one of Annie’s last blogs (http://www.annieduke.com/2009/05/final-episode-of-celebrity-apprentice-trump-slowrolls-me/) on the subject she publicly thanked the Trumpster for the way he hired Joan Rivers. “In the previous seven seasons of The Apprentice he has never done anything but pointed to the winner and said ‘You’re Hired.’ Last night, instead, he looked at me and, after asking if I knew what he was going to say, said, ‘Annie, You’re Fired.’ Nice slow roll. Good game, sir.” On the show Annie raised more than $730k for her charity, Refugees International, $460,000 of which came from the final episode’s task. Duke has done a lot of fundraising for Refugees International and she also started Ante Up For Africa, the annual celebrity tournament organized by her and actor Don Cheadle for the World Series of Poker. This year’s tournament takes place July 2 at the Rio during the 2009 WSOP.
